On what potential is

The acorn has the potential to become an oak tree.  The solar power device uses knowledge of science to harvest potential energy from the sun to power devices such as cellphones.

An acorn has within itself the potential to become an oak tree.  A person may have the opinion that the acorn will become a yew tree, but unless the person is a genetic expert at manipulation of genes, the acorn has no potential to become a yew tree.

The Derveni Papyrus says:

“In these (verses) he indicates that the beings always subsisted, and the beings that are now come to be from (or: out of) subsisting things.

The Derveni Papyrus describes potential as something that subsists, that unless a potential already exists in a thing, such as the potential for an oak tree subsists in the acorn, but the yew tree does not, only an oak tree is possible from the acorn.

Deal with truth rather than opinions

Those in the LHP in theory deal with real things, that is to say, that they put aside opinions, and look for what is real.  Human sheep will base their faith, truth and ideas upon opinions that have neither basis in material reality or in the subsisting potentials from which material things come about.  A sheep will believe for instance that the yew tree will come out of an acorn based upon their faith, prayers and hubris; those of the LHP will base their truth on the empirical approach of observation, demonstration and experience of an oak tree coming from an acorn, and using the inductive reasoning of inferring that this common pattern is the same for all acorns.

With no potential for something, a thing can never become that something

If a thing has no subsisting potential for something else, then that something else will never manifest.  If an individual avoids smoking tobacco, they remove one potential to manifest lung cancer.  If an individual jogs each day, they create a potential to run faster when for instance they are rushing to catch a bus.  In any problem or challenge, it is best to focus on looking for the potential in a thing rather than blindly forcing an opinion upon a thing that does not exist in a subsisting potential in that thing; only oak trees come from acorns, not opinions of yew trees.  If an individual wants to create or invent something, look for the subsisting potential in the thing, then liberate it.  Eros and his arrows know the subsisting potentials in things, and uses his arrows to liberate or release that potential into a material, manifested or kinetic form.

How to discover a hidden potential in a thing

Potentials are subsisting, which is to say they already exist forever somewhere, and they are called into being by certain processes in nature, for instance planting an acorn in soil initiates a process of growing the oak tree from it.  One of the challenges of knowing a potential is they are invisible and hidden.  How to discover a potential in a thing? Firstly, humility, seeing what is there rather than blinding self with hubristic opinions; using the empirical method of observation, demonstration and experience, then using the inductive method to infer that this pattern is common and applicable to a wider range of situations; oak trees commonly come from acorns.  If empirically one observes galaxies and hurricanes moving in a spiral, one might infer a common pattern that all things move in a motion of a spiral rather than a straight line.

A potential has two qualities

A potential has two qualities.  An acorn for instance has to have a pattern, idea or map to become an oak tree; but also the acorn needs the energy, gas or fuel to become the oak tree.  If the oak tree is the final destination in the journey, the potential in the acorn provides the map and gas to get to that destination.  Also to note is that all things visible and manifested in nature are in constant motion or change, that all things are a work in progress, there being no final states, but a paradox of completeness and working to completion; that the potential and the kinetic realisation of that potential is cycling in and out of each other at every moment in a thing.  I have the potential of becoming human, and all my life at every moment that potential is being manifested in a kinetic state of being human, and I will never suddenly become a yew tree in my current life.

Where potentials come from

Where do potentials come from? The Derveni Papyrus describes the processes of nature in a metaphorical way, and describes a voice that is always speaking and teaching, but not instructing, neither can it be heard in the sense of hearing things.  Those that connect with this voice learn or become aware of things in the same way as the metaphorical eating of the fruit from the forbidden tree of knowledge, and the individual gains two qualities: strength and the cause.

The cause (daemon) and potential

Strength has already been dealt with, it is another name for potential.  Cause is described by the Derveni Papyrus as a “daemon”, which is the quality that drives potentials into a manifested or visible material form or kinetic state.  The reason why Heraclitus and others consider war or strife as the principle rule of nature, is that all motion and change is driven by the clash of two or more opposites, without which no potential can be driven into kinetic form.  It is not enough for an acorn to contain the map and gas to become the oak tree, there has to be a daemon or clash of opposites to drive that potential out of the acorn into the material manifested form of an oak tree; the acorn has to be subject to a process of liberation through planting, the addition of water, soil, light and air (all four elements) to get the oak tree out of the acorn.

How potentials become manifested

The Derveni Papyrus describes how the voice becomes the breath of Zeus, or the wisdom upon which all things in nature move.  The wisdom is metaphorically described as consisting of three female weavers known as Moira. The first of the Moira spins out one thing from the clash of multiple subsisting potentials, like a baby comes from two joining separate sets of genes from two parents.  The second Moira allocates the potential to a thing, such as intelligence in a baby.  The third Moira spits the potential out into the material world, the baby cannot move outside of its potential, for instance every living thing is doomed to die because their genes can only function so long until they fall apart by the natural decay through old age that all living things are doomed to face, if they are fortunate to live that long.

A thing can never move outside of its potential

Once a thing is liberated from its potential state into the kinetic material world, it moves within the limits of its potential unless acted upon by some external contrary force.  There is no mind or god acting to direct things in nature once they are released and manifested, they will flow along according to their potential state, the acorn becoming an oak tree, the oak tree throwing down acorns, and so on.  If an asteroid smacks into the earth and kills everyone, it was a random accident, no god or mind is the cause of this; asteroid and planet have moved according to their potentials and collided accidentally.

The LHP individual has the edge over opinionated human sheep

Stupid sheep think opinions that a god or mind has sent three hurricanes crashing into the USA to punish gay people.  The wise of the LHP know that the hurricanes are born out of natural processes following their own potential natures, strengthened by the warmth of the sea, dying as the land suck the energy out of them when they hit landfall.  The philosophy of potentiality gives the LHP individual a significant edge over human sheep; whilst the human sheep pray for fruitless opinions, those of the LHP can find the potentials, liberate them, and use those potentials to their own advantage.

Desiring an internet free of stagnation

The internet is alike to a grave yard, drowning in fixed unchanging content rarely recycled or fresh.  Why can’t everything be generated immediately for the moment by an AI, which changes from one moment to the next?

One of my frustrations about the internet and media is that everything that is generated and consumed is a fixed snapshot of a moment.  Heraclitus says that if you step in the river a second time, it will be different from the first time, since all nature is moving and changing from moment to moment.  What is served up on the internet such as a song, a video, an image or news article is a fixed unchanging thing, which makes the internet seem dead and stagnant, drowning under useless unchanging dead content.  How exciting if the user could serve up content that was changing from one moment to the next, a song that changed, a video, or news report.

 

I can visit my garden at different times, what will be served up to me will be different each time.  Moment to moment plants, animals and climate are appearing, changing and vanishing.  Everything in the garden is fresh, new and never the same.  This garden is manifesting a narrative that is exciting, surprising and creative.  How I wish this organic state of my garden might be replicated on the internet and in the media.

With the advent of artificial intelligence it should be possible that the AI can match the need of the user with unique, fresh and useful content there and then, which at this moment only happens in a limited way with regards to weather and financial markets.

I think the days of search engines such as Google are numbered, which is in essence a search engine of fixed static content like videos.  An AI could generate animation, images, songs that are unique, spontaneous and in real-time, changing from moment to moment, and therefore cannot be indexed for a search.

When it comes to art, I prefer something that has motion such as an engine powered by the wind rather than a fixed static picture hanging on the wall.  My philosophy of what I would like in art and the internet reflects the philosophy of Heraclitus, that all things are in motion and changing at each moment.

The Derveni Papyrus is a recommended text for anyone in the LHP.

As a student of the philosopher Heraclitus I was most excited to come across two new sources, which I think everyone who is a LHP thinker or magician might be interested in.

 

 

 

These are: Book 9 Chapter 1 Diogenes Laertius, Lives of Eminent Philosophers

and

Derveni Papyrus

The first source deals with Heraclitus, the second with an ancient text that mentions Heraclitus.  Both Heraclitus and the writer of the Derveni Papyrus are grounded in the Orphic mysteries tradition, with Heraclitus living within reasonable travelling distance from two ancient oracles.  They are agnostics, who reject superstition, reject belief in mythological entities, and promote a type of process theory based upon the empirical method of what they sense and experience in the natural world.  Their world-view lacks the input of satellites and telescopes, for instance thinking the stars are bowls that catch fire from evaporating water, or the insight that the Earth is one small part of a vast cosmos of planets, stars and galaxies.

The Derveni Papyrus is around 2300 years old, written around 200 years after the death of Heraclitus, the writer influenced by Heraclitus.  The text was found in 1962 in the tomb of a Macedonian, conserved by an attempt to burn it on their funeral pyre.  Only in recent decades has technology become available to recover and then translate a large portion of what this text says. The Derveni Papyrus is described as one of the most important and oldest texts found of Western philosophy.

All the ideas in the LHP and the Western philosophical tradition are founded upon the ideas of thinkers such as those who wrote the Derveni Papyrus, but because of lack of texts from these writers, ideas have been misunderstood and incorrectly applied.  I draw attention to the above texts in order to give my readers a source of original definitions, which might cause a paradigm shift of thinking, as has happened to me after I read them.

As an example, does the reader understand the relationship of the elements of water, fire, earth and air to each other, especially in a step-by-step process, for instance that fire becomes moisture as it cools, becomes concentrated as water, then further solidifies as earth.  How there might be a significant difference between terms of air, winds and moisture, that air may not be in fact an element, rather moisture is.  That a daemon is not a demon, but a cause, that is the process of striking causing multiple opposites to spin and mix together to form something new.  How chaos may not be watery or water.  Why all things have inherent order, even though  everything is randomly smashing into each other.  Potential is those things that always exist, but come about in a kinetic state after they are driven and joined together by strife.

The philosophy of the wasteland

The Temple of Nodens was probably the location where King Arthur and the Grail Legends originated.  It is one of the places that the Grail was said to have been kept.  Practically everyone has missed how important this location was in many Celtic stories connected to King Arthur. Anyone who was experiencing something lost, sick or broken, came here for solutions.

My Celtic ancestors have a concept called the wasteland, this is an existential state of a land and its people who has become sick, broken and lost.  A simple example, the flowers become sick and die because of poisons in the land, soil and air; the bees vanish because there are no flowers; pollination systems break down for lack of bees, no food crops, people grow hungry, then civilisation breaks down as the hungry people fight each other.

The healthy land is symbolised in Celtic coins as a horse or a barley head.  Stories such as the Mabinogion contain metaphors of the seasonal changes in the fortunes of the land, such as food and drink becoming invisible, stolen or vanishing, and the actions of a hero to set things right.  The people of the ideal land experience strength, fertility and health, but the reverse in the wasteland. Just as hunger is a temporary state in winter, it can become permanent if the land has been injured, turning into the wasteland.  In the Celtic stories the land is usually symbolised as a female such as the wife of a king. In the Mabinogian a king uses his wife as a footstool, symbolic that his strength comes from the land.  The king was symbolic of the people, and how the king treated the land reflected how the people treated the land.  King Arthur loved glory, war and fame, neglected and mistreated the land, it abandoned him in the metaphor of Guinevere, the land immediately turned into the wasteland, Camelot fell, and it required a quest to find the Holy Grail to sort out the mess.

A modern version of the wasteland is the children’s story Neverending Story.  The land of Fantasia gradually is being destroyed by the Nothing, there is a wolf-like creature symbolic of the thing causing the Nothing, a young hunter following a quest similar to the Grail Quest comes face-to-face with the wolf, and interesting philosophy is expressed in the encounter:

All the nations of our planet have now fallen to the wasteland, everything is becoming sick, broken and lost.  All the social, political, environmental and economic challenges faced by humanity are faces of the wasteland.  The metaphorical wolf-like creature behind this wasteland is control, predation and consumerism upon which human society is based.

My personal attention is on the wasteland, and the metaphorical wolf causing it.  I am studying my Celtic ancestors, the patterns of nature and the observations of Heraclitus looking for methods to counter the wasteland and the wolf.  Fighting the many challenges of the wasteland, such as the Hampstead SRA hoax, is only fighting the symptoms of an underlying disease, and thus the Hampstead SRA hoax campaign is my last campaign of interventions in society.

A successful intervention against the wasteland requires three things: discovering the sleeping potential in a thing; creating a strifeful situation of two opposites at a location to drive the motions and changes; liberating the hidden potential in a thing through an activity.  Once these three things are done, over time what is lost, broken and sick is restored to its initial integrity without further interventions.  Finding hidden potentials requires a degree of discernment, and hubris blinds in such situations, a reason why most of the knights of King Arthur failed in the Grail Quest.  Individuals who have studied the philosophy behind successful magick might see familiar principles in what I have written.  The wasteland arises because the potential, the strife between two opposites, the kinetic, has been disrupted in a process or thing causing it to become sick, broken or lost. The harmony requires all three elements in a process or thing to be in play: potential; strife; kinetic.

Measuring Satanism by a different scale

This is the symbol of chaos.  Those that walk the Left Hand Path such as Satanists are all aligned to chaos.  Those that are chaotically aligned will follow their own internal rules rather than the conformist rules of external authorities.

Everything in nature moves, evolves and changes through the opposition of two or more things, and thus this provides a way of measuring something based upon two opposites, for instance based upon the measure of temperature or activity.  The best measures are based upon something that is observable or demonstrated in nature, for instance how chaotic a thing is, rather than a subjective measure that exists only in the human mind such as how good something is.

People generally measure Satanism based upon a moralistic subjective scale of good and bad. In judgement of a rule, the individual measures if the individual is good or bad, for instance a Christian might judge an individual who practices witchcraft as bad because a rule in their holy book the Bible opposes witchcraft.  As the philosopher Heraclitus observes, all things in nature is good, but it is only humanity that divides all things up as good and bad.  Of course any action that falls outside of nature, such as an individual torturing a kitten for the fun of it, has to be measured in some way, which might be along the lines of teleology, which says if a process is in harmony with its natural purpose, it is good, and since the telos of life excludes torture of animals for the fun of it, this action is bad.

I suggest a better scale to measure those of the Left Hand Path is based upon the opposites of law and chaos.  Those that have read the Michael Moorcock books will be familiar with law and chaos alignments.  In nature the moon is lawful in that it moves in a predictable fashion, yet an electron is unpredictable making it chaotic.  Those that identify to the Left Hand Path are aligned to chaos, those that favor conformist group-minded religions such as the Mormons are lawful.  Some have tried to mix objective measures such as chaos-law with moral subjective measures such as good-evil, which is like mixing peas with custard, unworkable.

Those that judge based upon good and bad moral rules experience a challenge with me because I won’t sit easily in any moralistic framework.  On the one hand I delight in planting trees, installing nest boxes and feeding the birds; I have stopped the traffic to let hedgehogs safely cross the road, and picked up young birds sitting in the middle of the road to put them safely to the side; yet, I regularly break the law by riding my bike on pavements, through red traffic lights, without lights (people keep nicking my lights) and in places cycling is banned.  I will sit neatly in a chaos-law measuring framework in that I am not subject to external rules but my own, I am unpredictable and thrive in an anarchic environment.  Whilst people might debate about the creation and execution of something new such as AI, in an unknown situation, I will create and launch it and deal with the consequences afterwards, since I favour experience over theory.

It is a key measure of the nature of the Left Hand Path that those chaos-aligned individuals will follow their own internal rules rather than external authorities, and the lawful individuals such as Mormons will favor external authorities such as their church leaders, church, religious books and god.  Anyone can claim to be following the LHP, but they are easily discovered based upon chaos-lawful measures, a LHP individual is always aligned to chaos, following their own rules rather than that of external authorities.

In concluding, I would like to add that there exists a paradox.  Nature is the overall external authority, yet I tend to align my choices and actvity with the common patterns of nature, yet I say I favor my own internal rules over external authorities.  Nature and self are the same thing, reflections of each other, and all reason arises and ends in nature.  Inside, outside, above and below, everything is nature.  If the individual chooses to step outside of nature by unnatural action such as torturing a kitten, they have become unreasonable, they are outside of the common patterns of nature, they will get hammered one way or another for going outside of nature, since harming a kitten, harms the self, since all things are connected and reflect each other.  As Heraclitus says:

“The sun will not overstep his bounds, for if he does, the Erinyes, helpers of justice, will find him out.”

Those that push their hand into the fire will eventually learn what happens to those that step outside of the common patterns of nature, a reason why the human race is walking the path to extinction.

On struggle and justice

Because our ancestors had a close connection to nature, their laws and institutions was built around nature and the land.  Modern society has forgotten this connection, everyone will suffer as a result. 

My personal interpretations based upon Satanic Temple tenets. Tenet 2:

“The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions.”

Justice has two different meanings: in nature; in human society. The philosopher Heraclitus sums up justice in nature with the observation “strife is justice.”  In the video below a parent bird is attacking the cat which is evidently close to its nest, the cat catches the bird, which probably ends up as dinner.

In nature war is a constant state, where two opposites clash, where noble birds end up eaten by cats, or life is wiped out by a random comet collision with a planet. In the philosophy of Heraclitus justice means becoming, the end state of the war of opposites.  In nature all motion, change and evolution is down to the war of opposites.

There is no equality in law

In human society, when the many come together, they form a contract, a set of rules which becomes the foundation of a nation state.  As Plato suggests the function of the the State is that it benefits all, and thus the laws are in theory designed for the benefit of all the participants in the State.  Many consider the ideal form of justice is that all come before a court judge on an equal footing, but this has never been the case in all of history.

All groupings of people naturally find their level, the few of ability and money become the ruler, and the rest become the ruled.  The ruler creates and enforces the laws, and in common will use the laws to maintain and strengthen their positions of power and those of their family and allies.  Laws often become so complex that it requires experts (lawyers) to understand and argue the laws, which requires money to pay them, and thus the wealthy ruler will always be in a position of strength through money and connections in a law court against the poorer ruled.

Satanic Temple is realistic about the legal system

Satanic Temple recognises the reality of the legal system, that those with the money, armies and influence creates and enforces the laws, and will do so in their own interests.  With a new Republican leadership controlling all aspects of US legislation, laws will no doubt be passed to weaken the split of religion from State, and limit the rights of women over abortion. Satanic Temple in this tenet is realistic that it might be necessary to fight against laws and institutions that would come about that will undermine liberties and traditions that US citizens have enjoyed for decades and even since the foundation of their nation.

The foundation of law and institutions for my Celtic ancestors was the land

From my point of view I tie the justice of both nature and human society together.   My Celtic ancestors come from an animistic background, so they built their institutions and laws upon the foundation of land as a living entity that was the source of their strength, health and harvests.  For instance by law no individual with a disability could be leader as that leader was a bridge between the power of the land and the health of the people.  Likewise when the Romans whipped a Celtic queen and raped her daughters, this was a direct violation of the land, the Celtic Iceni rebelled and destroyed London amongst many other Roman cities.

Examples when there is a disconnection between people and land

I consider law and thus justice comes first from the land, this being the foundation upon which all else stands in human society. If for instance all the bees are destroyed, food crops will vanish, the hungry people will rebel, and in that struggle civilization collapses.  The Celts had a concept of a wasteland, where everything becomes sick, is lost and is broken, a situation that is evident in Syria, Libya, Iraq, Yemen, and is slowly undermining other nations around them.  Some of the basic things of human life is being lost, in New Delhi capital of India people no longer enjoy the air quality I take for granted. My brother was forced out of Hong Kong because the pollution made his son sick. Iran as a nation will cease to exist when their water runs out inside thirty years.  If the land is not first in mind in law and institution, all else will fall.

A healthy society needs opposition and diversity

The laws that are made that desire a frozen state of sameness behind political correctness, uniformity, peace and control. These laws seek to eliminate the war of opposites by creating only one overall unchanging state, but without two opposites in contention there is no evolution, no motion, no change, instead everything breaks down and becomes sick.

The land and nature is the foundation stone on all campaigning

I start from nature and the land first when it comes to campaigning.  What Satanic Temple will do, as noble as this is, they are treating the symptoms of the disease, plastering over the cracks that will only get larger.  The sickness runs deeper, it is because people no longer follow the path of experience that gives rise to wisdom, the senses that gives rise to knowledge, and follow the patterns of nature that gives rise to reason; they are lost in a fog of opinion, entertainment and hubris.

The solution is in those that can bridge the land with the people

Satanic Temple has it right that justice is always an ongoing struggle, the war of the opposites, and in that struggle they will cause motions, change and evolution.  But the Satanic Temple are struggling with the branches of the thorny tree, the problem is in the roots because there is nothing bridging the land to the people, the door is closed, and all will collapse into ruin because of it.

More observations on power and control

The war of the opposites is a necessary and natural state for there to be healthy change, motion and evolution.  The individual seeks to find the harmony of the opposites where all opposites remain empowered and benefit.

A famous saying of Heraclitus “strife is justice” provides a useful introduction for my Satanic observations on power and control.  A common theme Heraclitus explores is how change, motion and evolution of all things in nature is driven by a war of two or more opposites.  Heraclitus considers if there was no conflict of opposites present, then nothing could exist, since this opposition joins two opposites together in a new harmonious thing.  This is so when you consider the motion of your body requires muscles and bones acting in opposition to each other, or the uneven chemical opposition of cells causing electrical firing of neurons allowing your heart to beat and your brain to think.

 

The strife of opposites is the principle rule of nature

The conflict of opposites is the number one rule of nature, everything that exists depends upon the active manifestation of this principle rule at all times.  The moment the opposing elements of rain and sun end, so does the rainbow.   With this rule in mind, when the individual comes into conflict with another individual or with nature, the worst action they can do is seek to control, dominate or disempower the opposing challenger, for this leads to the loss of an opposite, and no opposition means no motion, change or evolution.  I vaguely remember it noted that when Rome eliminated their principle rival Carthage, it was the beginning of the end of Rome.  Eliminating the opposite, which creates a state of stasis and peaceful stagnation, won’t automatically cause everything involved to vanish, it results in disintergration, decay and death over a period of time.  Nature needs a state of conflict, so if the individual destroys an external opposite, the individual usually turns in on itself, and conflict arises within, leading to other external agencies the opportunity to take advantage.

The love of nature for the war of opposites

Because nature loves to move and change, it will push for conflict, and so a controlling individual or agency will expend a vast amount of resources fighting against nature, an ultimately fruitless exercise.  Strictly controlled regimes, those such as communist North Korea and former USSR, seeks uniformity, stasis and strictly defined linear motions, historically are manifested as sick, underachieving and inefficient nations, doomed to fail at some point in spectacular fashion.

Control of nature causes dire results

The hubris of humanity which approaches nature from a controlling and dominating point of view has manifested a global environmental crisis that could potentially end human civilisation inside a hundred years.  A classic example of humanity seeking control of nature with dire results was communist China between 1958 and 1960 when it encouraged its population to slaughter sparrows; this succeeded in a proliferation of insects including locusts which attacked the harvests, a situation that contributed to a famine killing 20 million of the population.

Individuals who seek to control and feel powerful

My personal studies of individuals who harm the vulnerable, including children and animals, reveals a common pattern of a need for control and a feeling of power. Such individuals are getting their feelings of power through their sexual and violent activities, which encourages the production of hormone adrenaline, which works in conjunction with the brain structure the amydgala. Rather like a drug high adrenaline is short lived and the individual crashes in a depressive low, a pattern emerges that they need greater and greater adrenaline fixes through increasingly violent and sexual acts.  These type of activities requires the disempowerment of an opposing individual, which is a classic feature of paedophile activities involving the grooming and violation of children.

Shared power

In situations where power is shared, where both opposing sides feel empowered in an activity, different brain structures and hormones are in play, especially oxytocin, and the effects of feeling powerful are longer without the depressive low side effect.

Summary – the good natural strategy

In summary, the war of opposites is a necessary requirement for change, motion and evolution to happen.  The action that will lead to positive outcomes is the one that looks for the harmony between two opposites that allows all opposites to remain in play, both empowered and both benefiting.  How the harmony is found is down to the individual playing around with strategies, through reason, experience and the senses working out the right path to take in the situation.
