Trump election causes membership surge in Satanic Temple

satanic_temple

Politically to the left the Satanic Temple has an inclusive approach to membership which contributed to a new membership surge after Trump was elected US President.

With over 50,000 members before Trump was elected, the Satanic Temple has enjoyed a major surge in membership after getting thousands of enquires within 36 hours of Trump winning the US presidential election.

Satanic Temple politically is liberal, becoming the left wing of the Satanic religion.  Satanists who are politically right wing tend to be part of organisations such as Church of Satan and post on LHP forums such as 600club.

With Trump visibly moderating his positions on matters such as prosecuting Hillary Clinton and on Obamacare, Satanists are waiting to see what Trump does before deciding their own positions relative to Trump and his Republican government.

  1. It is my opinion that you may be using the term Satanist a bit too generally, to broad a brush, as the saying goes. I have personally witnessed satanist explain their philosophy to be right, left, democratic and republican. I’m sure your statement appeals to some satanist, and I am sure there are as many who would disagree with it. You’ll have that any time you have a philosophy that can be personally defined. As for the The Satanic Temple, I know far more satanist who do not take them seriously, than do. I don’t see that TST has done anything that couldn’t have been accomplished without appealing to satanism. It seems as though they are simply cashing in one another of the many social trends of our generation.

    • From the ONA religion you are an individual looking at Satanism from outside. Satanism like so many religions and philosophies has many diverse types, in the same way if you name any animal or plant, that those also have many variations of the same thing. Diversity is one of the common qualities of nature, this is the same with Satanism.

It is common for tribal types to say one group of Satanists are not real Satanists. A Satanist can be of any politics, and they can be either social activists or raw social Darwinists.

      • I must clarify two things before our dialog can be meaningful. One, ONA is a tradition, not a religion, and Two ONA has many dynamic forms which embody its essence and core values, one of which is in fact Traditional Satanism. I have years of experience with the numerous varieties of Satanism, such that I an certainly not a novice nor outsider. That being said, I no longer refer to myself as a satanist, and have not for several years. My philosophy is expressed via Interrogist, and documented via The Numinous Way.

Satanisms diversity is actually one of its failures, as any philosophy that can be personally defined is basically meaningless. It can mean anything, to anyone, in any way, such that it means nothing to say “I’m a Satanist”, because everyone just looks at you like “What kind?” ONA, or CoS, or ToS, or JoS, or ToTBL, or OTO, or this, or that, or them, or those?. You have twenty different conflicting philosophies all claiming the same title. So you tell me, is Satanism prescriptive or descriptive? No matter how you answer, some other satanist will come running, saying that it means something else. Its childish, really.

Certainly one of these groups have to have the genuine, literal, original, and correct “kind”, I mean they can’t all be right, because they conflict. And if you would say “To each their own” you have delved into egalitarian political correctness, which just isn’t any sort of “satanism” I care to entertain. I would have a straight forward answer and a clear definition before I recognize anyones satanism as actually being “Satanism”, but thats just how us ONA guys roll. To the meat of the subject. To the heart of it. What say you?

      • There are core qualities in Satanism such as focus on individuality, this separates Satanists from most group-minded religions. Outside these core qualities the Satanism of one individual differs from another. If I was to give you definitions outside of the core qualities, these would be my own interpretations, and would as you infer be different from another Satanist.

It is undesirable to limit a religion or philosophy by dogmatic definitions. Satanism is an organic religion, changing and evolving to reflect the needs of the time. This is the same process as in nature, all living things are evolving with their changing environment, those that are fixed in a position will likely go extnct.

    • Nexion Nine Thirteen claims “the ona is a tradition”. Actually, if you do your research, you’ll know the ONA is not some old tradition, but was completely fabricated in the 1970s in the wake of the chaos magick movement. This is not a secret in the British occult scene. But then again, some people think Wicca goes back centuries too.

  2. It is interesting to see how one man cause so much trouble in America and elsewhere in the world even before he has sworn the presidential oath. I don’t think you use the word satanist too broad. Satan means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. I will keep following the blog. Hailz from helvetet in Sweden.

  3. Satanicviews: “There are core qualities in Satanism such as focus on individuality, this separates Satanists from most group-minded religions.”

Nonsense. If that were true there would be no “Satanic Groups” and this very post is exactly about a Satanic GROUP (TST) having others conform to its beliefs and join the bandwagon. Individualism? Not at all. How is that any different from non satanic clubs? Its exactly the same.

Satanicviews: “It is undesirable to limit a religion or philosophy by dogmatic definitions.”

It is not dogmatic to insist that words have meanings. What if I created a new club where we all used the word “RED” to mean every color. Would everything be red, or would I be misusing the word? Thats right, I’d be misusing the word, because red means red, and others colors have their own words. Fact.

    • TST is an example of one Satanist group that does not require conformity. There is little dogma to conform to, they have seven tenets that are basic common sense.

The authority in Satanism is limited to self over their own philosophy. There are many meanings, which is why Satanists argue over definitions. In your example red to a bee is black, to an individual who is color-blind, they may see a different color to what others might see.

I know for instance you have created a detailed philosophy of your own, but I am sure your fellow ONA associates won’t agree with all your ideas and definitions.

      • Your statements are a paradox. Could I disregard those seven tenets and still join the TST? If so, their tenets are pointless, and if not, they are in fact demanding conformity.

You are correct that I do not agree with all variations of ONA. I am of the Sinister Numen movement, and not the Traditiona Satanism movement. I am very likely among the most public dissidents or standalones in ONA popularity, in the fine company of Temple of THEM and L316, all of us directly inspired by ONA, but doing or did our own thing with it, rather than the more popular blind conformity and MSS worship.

I am genuinely curious what you know of my person, and my philosophy? Were you informed, or did you study my work?

      • Satanic Temple unlike most Satanic groups has only seven tenets, which is its philosophical approach. Any potential member can read these tenets, and if they disagree with them, not join the Satanic Temple. There is no conformity, because people who join TST generally agree with these tenets. Many of these tenets should be no problem to Satanists, for instance the tenet which considers the individual has sole authority over their own body, and nobody else. The last tenet makes clear these tenets should not be treated dogmatically. TST members are encouraged to think for themselves.

As to your own philosophy, I am aware of it from my occasional visits to 600club to read the views of fellow Satanists.

Please do not judge me according to idle chat, lol. I have official works. My older stuff you can observe here: https://archive.org/details/CorpusNineThirteen My new project has just begun, but you can watch it come together here: https://nexion913blog.wordpress.com/ Your honest opinion is always welcome.

  5. This is the part of the “Trumpocalypse” I hate: the fact that even us Satanists have to deal with bitter division over our political opinions, and I think we should know better. The Satanic Temple and Church of Satan split seems to be a macrocosm of what I’ve seen in the Satanic blogosphere, with myself being on one side and someone else being on another and the both of us significantly opposed to each other. Can’t wait to see how The Satanic Temple turns out. Will they be a meaningful countercultural force in a political environment dominated by Republicans, or will it just prove to be the Atheism+ of Satanism? Only time will tell. Either way, I do not wish for the Satanic blogosphere to meet the same fate as the atheist community did when Atheism+ showed up.

Can’t wait to see how The Satanic Temple turns out. Will they be a meaningful liberal countercultural force in a political environment now dominated by Republicans, or will it just prove to be the Atheism+ of Satanism? Only time will tell. Either way, I do not wish for the Satanic blogosphere to meet the same fate the internet atheist community did once Atheism+ showed up.
